Childhood Brain Injury Trust

New Partnership with the Childhood Brain Injury Trust (CBIT)

I am so excited to be working with CBIT this year. This is a charity close to my heart as several of my close family members have had and still suffer from acquired brain injuries. I wish we had known about the support of wonderful charities like CBIT when we were really in the thick of dealing with the traumas of acquired brain injuries. I was recently lucky enough to attend a workshop with CBIT all about acquired brain injuries and was overwhelmed by the depth of knowledge and compassion CBIT has for families in all stages of coming to terms with and supporting a child with an acquired brain injury (ABI).

What is CBIT?

CBIT is a small UK based charity that envisions a world where all children and young people receive the help, support and prompt diagnoses that they need after brain injury to live their life to the full. I first met CBIT at the Occupational Therapy Show in 2022 and loved everything that the charity stood for. We realized that we had a lot of core values in common and both knew that communication is something that we are passionate about. Please follow the links at the end of this post to be taken to CBIT where you will find lots of helpful information.

How could communication cards help a young person with an acquired brain injury?

Young people with an ABI often need more processing time and can struggle with word finding and emotional literacy. Due to fatigue or difficulties with communication skills or behaviour, young people can experience frustration/ irritation as activities like word finding and self regulation seem much more difficult. Communication cards may help some children to take some pressure and stress away by acting as a communication aid in times of fatigue and high stress. For example, emotions wheels could be used as a way to help reinforce emotional literacy, and sensory grounding cards (as pictured below) could be used as a way to help teach self-regulation skills and give the brain much needed sensory input when a child is feeling overwhelmed. Please feel free to drop me an email if you want to discuss any of my products in more detail and are unsure of how they might be of help to you or your family as you are processing and helping your child recover from an ABI.
